It’s that time of year again, all kids and parents getting ready to go back to school. At Compass Physio we see both parents and children in our clinics asking similar questions and looking for advice with regards to education and returning to school. Most of our advice is very simple and inexpensive. Our aim is to maintain a healthy body and avoid and injuries such as back pain, acute neck pain, knee pain etc. So here are our top tips!!

School Bag: Common sense really, if you can get a locker in school that would be really helpful. Ensure the straps are pulled up tight so it’s close to the body and make sure you use two straps (Note: This may appear uncool, but you won’t have back pain). If you can book share or use online tools (with limits) to do homework then there will be less need to carry heavy bulky books.

Screen Time/Technology: Less is more!! Just about everything we do now involves technology so it’s very hard to avoid screens. Ensure you have tech free times or tech free places set during the day, such as dinner table, bedroom etc. If your child is complaining about headaches, it may be worth getting an eye test, they may be straining to see the screen (hunched over) putting excessive strain on their upper cervical spine (neck) which can cause headaches.

Sleep: Ask any new parent – sleep deprivation is torture! Having at least 7 hours sleep is really important for general health and well being – CLICK HERE TO WATCH A GREAT VIDEO ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP. Making sure your child has a set bed time and routine to help ensure

New Activities/Sport: Trying new activities is proven to help with brain development, along with having transferable skills. Sport and exercise is a really good way to manage stress and anxiety, it also teaches children about teamwork. If your child is not the “sporting type” ensure they get outside for a simple 20 mins walk every day. Bodies are designed to move, not sit in front of books, laptops, tablets or netflix all day.

Shoes: It wouldn’t be a Colin Phillips blog unless I had a rant about footwear! Converse and Dubarrys shoes are not designed for people with fallen arches. We have seen countless incidents where simply changing footwear improves foot pain, knee pain and even back pain. If you’re not sure please come and make an appointment where we can discuss footwear. We can also provide insoles to suit your foot biomechanics (The shape of your foot).
