What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury.

Typically this occur following a direct impact to the head or shoulder region.

The impact causes the brain to shake within the skull quickly back and forth. This shaking may or may not cause a loss of consciousness.

Quick facts

  • Concussions account for around 3% of all injuries in sports.
  • You do not need to a direct impact to the heads to experience a concussion.
  •  Concussions symptoms may develop up to 72 hours after the initial event.

What are the signs of a Concussion?

Common symptoms after a concussion include headache, loss of memory and confusion. The amnesia usually involves forgetting the event that caused the concussion.

What are the some of the other symptoms?

  • Dizziness or “seeing stars”
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed reaction to speech
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Irritability
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Poor sleep

What to do when you if you suspect a concussion?

Medical attention should be sought IMMEDIATELY. The symptoms of a conclusion may also be a signs of a more serious brain injury.

Brain injuries require further medical investigations and monitoring. Do not return to sport while the symptoms of a concussion are still present. Players who continue to play, even for a few minutes after sustaining a concussion, take twice as long to recover as those who come off the field of play immediately.

What can physiotherapy do to help?

Most people with concussion make a complete recovery.

The traditional advice given was to rest from all activity until symptoms had resolved. However, a gradual, supervised return to sport is now advised.

The mainstay of treatment is this restoration of normal function through physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy can screen players balance, movement and strength for return to play and facilitate the dynamic movements required for a safe return to play.
