5 Ways To Help Reach Your Exercise Goals
At Compass Physio and Trim Physio we can help you achieve your new year resolutions
The goals could be to
- Get into a regular exercise routine
- Lose Weight
- Increase Muscle mass
- Increase physical activity through a regular exercise program
- Strength Training in the gym
- Injury Prevention
These might be training for an upcoming race or just keeping momentum with those new year’s resolutions!!!
Setting realistic and achievable goals can help you to stay motivated. Here are a few practical tips that can make all the difference
Quick Facts:
Research shows 93% of us make resolutions each new year
The most popular New Year’s resolutions are weight loss, getting fit and quitting smoking.
By the second week of January, 25 percent of people have already abandoned these resolutions, are you in that group or are you still going strong?
How to Reach those Exercise Goals:
#1
Specific, Realistic Goals Work The Best.
When it comes to making a change,
the people who succeed are the ones who set specific goals.
“I will go to the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday”
this is a much more doable goal than “I’m getting fit”.
Get yourself an accountability partner.
That could be someone who goes with you to a class or checks in to see you are on track
Record exactly how much training you are doing and how often.
We find this really useful if we see people for physiotherapy or injury prevention
Often a little tweak to the amount of training and when its being done means we can get you back to it straight away.
#2
It Takes Time To Change.
It will take a couple of weeks of hard work before settling into your routine.
Your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new activity is part of your regular routine.
Research shows it takes 30 days (or more) to create a habit.
#3
Repeating A Goal Makes It Stick.
Say your goal out loud each morning and remind yourself of what you want and what you’re working for.
Writing it down every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen.
This can be given the fancy phrase of affirmation but in fact it does help! Ive been using it for the past year.
#4
Pleasing Other People Doesn’t Work.
The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself — do it for you! not because of a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach etc.
It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you’re doing something out of obligation.
Set the big goal and keep visualizing yourself achieving it.
This makes it a lot easier to stay on track when you have that emotional driver to achieve it for yourself. And maybe have a little reward at the end!
#5
Roadblocks Don’t Mean Failure.
Slip-ups are normal and are part of the learning process.
It may take a few tries to reach a goal. But that’s fine — it’s normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change.
Just remind yourself to get back on track.
Speak to your accountability partner or personal trainer and the journey may take a slight detour but the goal stays the same
