Is it my Neck or my Shoulder?
One of the questions we get asked alot at Compass Physio is…
Where is this pain coming from
Is it my neck or my shoulder?
Take John for example
Attended the clinic 3 weeks ago with right arm pain
Top of the arm in the biceps area
It had come on gradually
No big fall
But, it was getting worse
Affecting lifting, gardening and now sleep
When John arrived we talked through and John referred to the “shoulder pain”
We did a couple of simple test of the shoulder, nothing
Then as my suspicions had lead to me to check the neck
We checked the joints in Johns neck
With John laying face up I applied pressure to the joints at the side of his neck
Pain referred to the bicep area of Johns arm
It was a bit of an AHA moment
We set about some treatment and with a couple of sessions Johns pain is gone
He is now building up the strength in the neck and shoulder area that will reduce the likelihood of this problem returning again
It is SO IMPORTANT to get the right diagnosis to know how you can best manage your symptoms
Too often we see people doing some brilliant youtube/instagram exercises
Unfortunately they are for the wrong area
That valuable time spent doing the exercises would be far better spent doing something else
