Shoulder Dislocations – Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Rehabilitation
Overview
A shoulder dislocation occurs when the humerus bone (upper arm bone) pops out of the shoulder socket. The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint which makes it susceptible to dislocations. A dislocated shoulder requires urgent medical attention. Do not try to relocate the joint. At Compass Physio we generally don’t see many dislocations unless we are working at a sporting event. Most dislocations will be initially treated at Emergency department followed by a rehabilitation program designed by our chartered physiotherapist at Compass Physio.
Causes of shoulder dislocations
- Falling on an outstretched arm
- A direct blow to the shoulder
- Forceful throwing, lifting, or hitting
- Force applied to an outstretched arm, such as in a football tackle
Symptoms
- Out of place shoulder
- Swelling or bruising
- Inability to move the joint
- Weakness with a loss of power
- Numbness and tingling around the shoulder and into arm or fingers
Diagnosis
At Compass Physio a full battery of diagnosis tests will be completed to determine the extent of the shoulder injury. This will include strength, movement and neurological testing. Special tests will be completed to investigate possible tears to muscle, cartilage and ligaments. Treatment ranges from non-operative to surgical, depending on multiple factors. These factors include presence of a tear, joint stability and recurrence.
Rehab
The first goal of physiotherapy rehab is to decrease pain and swelling. Physiotherapy will be necessary whether surgery was recommended or not. Physiotherapy interventions will include manual and exercise-based therapies. Physiotherapy will aim to restore full range of movement and strength within the early stages of healing. Next physiotherapy will work to restore strength, balance and proprioception. Late stage rehab will include dynamic exercises such as throwing and catching. At Compass Physio we aim to achieve mutually agreed rehab goals with a return to baseline function.
