Quick facts

There are currently about 130 orthopaedic surgeons in Ireland.

There are about 70,000 people waiting to see a consultant in Ireland.

Physiotherapy has been shown to be as effective as surgery in certain conditions.

Physiotherapy:

Physiotherapy has been shown to be as effective as surgery in certain conditions. Physiotherapy has been recommended as a means of prehab therapy to reduce recovery times. If you a person who is waiting for an orthopaedic review, prehab physiotherapy is highly recommended. This may reduce the need for surgery in the first instance and allow you to return to normal living in time.

The surgical process

1. Your doctor recommends a time and date for surgery

2. Pre-Surgery Arrangements – your general health is
assessed

3. Blood testing to detect any possible infections that may affect surgery

4. The surgery itself – you will be taken to theatre for the procedure

5. Your physiotherapy recovery thereafter

What can physiotherapy do to help?

The goal of physio rehabilitation after surgery is to reduce stiffness, increase joint movement and facilitate healing. Manual therapy will help to reduce muscle tightness and soreness. Manual therapy combined with a home exercise program will help to improve movement and reduce stiffness. While exercise based rehabilitation will help to build bone and muscle strength once again. Under the guidance of a chartered physiotherapist you will be given a graded set of exercises that will allow you to gradually build up your strength, balance and flexibility. Staying mobile is important as this will help to speed up the recovery.
